Discover Cosmopolitan Santiago, Chile with Tourico Vacations – The Andes are always covered in snow. It’s quite the backdrop from wherever you catch a glimpse. Most who enjoy this view are heading somewhere off the usual path, such as Patagonia or the desert, Atacama. Santiago, Chile was always overlooked as a luxury travel destination, but today, it’s enjoying its time in the limelight. Colonial architecture of the past meets todays bright, shining skyscrapers, ski slopes on the Andes, and a growing food scene. Did we mention the climate is conducive to just about any summertime activity? And that the region’s wine industry is thriving?
When it comes to weather, think Southern California. Santiago is also similar to the Mediterranean. The seasons are just the opposite of North America – from October through April, the region is dry and warm. Their winter is a little rainy with highs in the 50s. No matter when you visit, you should bring sets of clothing for both extremes, as mornings and evenings can be a little chilly.
Getting around the city isn’t difficult. The airport is just 20 minutes from the city center. You can book a taxi from the airport to your hotel, or there’s also a bus or rail line. Due to an influx of travelers wanting to see this burgeoning city, traffic can get heavy. Taking the metro train is probably the best choice. Ride fares are different depending on the time of day you’re boarding. That said, if you’re attempting a train ride during rush hour, you might not have a ride at all. Taxis are always available in the event you don’t want to wait.
There’s an abundance of things to do and sights to see in Santiago. If you enjoy shopping for traditional wares, head to La Vega Central. This is the main market in Santiago located just near the Mapocho River. The market is famous for its homegrown vegetables produced by the warm valleys of Chile. To say the market is large would be to do it an injustice – it’s several city blocks wide and is set up like a labyrinth. But you’ll have fun getting lost amongst the colorful shops while you dine on some tradtional Chilean food.
